Training at NIWA

NIWA staff teach a number of courses over a wide range of subjects. The workshops are particularly geared to meet the needs of council and other agency staff. Some are held at NIWA and others are staged as in-house training at an agency’s premises. Courses can be tailored to your requirements.

NIWA is a sponsor of the biennial SciCon conference for science educators to be held in Hamilton in July. The focus this year will be innovative science throughout the world, with a special emphasis on Australasia.

Keynote speakers will hold forth on topics ranging from nanotechnology to astronomy, from climate change to forensics. Others will contribute talks on topics as diverse as microbiological methods, death-defying physics demonstrations, insects in the classroom, animating science teaching, and Te Ara, the online encyclopaedia of New Zealand. In addition to the presentations, there will be workshops, field trips, and special sessions for primary teachers and science technicians.

At the conference, we will take the opportunity to talk with science teachers about Water & Atmosphere and its usefulness in the classroom, both in print and online. Teachers attending the conference are invited to fill out a short survey, visit the NIWA stand in the display area, and go into a prize draw.
