Chatham Rise Survey

The Chatham Rise, a large plateau between the South Island and Chatham Islands, is our most productive fishing ground. NIWA is conducting a detailed survey of the western Chatham Rise to improve our understanding of how marine ecosystems affect commercial fishing.

Fisheries

New Zealand's fishing industry currently exports $1.4 billion worth of products each year, and our Quota Management System is considered one of the best in the world.
Robust, sustainable fisheries management relies on good science. We need a thorough understanding of our marine ecosystem if we are to ensure our fisheries are fully utilised and sustainable, as well as mitigate any environmental impacts and manage competing demands for resources.

The Ross Sea Trophic Model

Understanding the feeding relationships between different species in the Ross Sea, and how they are affected by commercial fishing, is essential for the establishment of a sustainable fishery in the region.

The Antarctic Toothfish Fishery

Antarctic toothfish are fished using longlines in southern Antarctic waters. NIWA fisheries scientist Alistair Dunn describes the history of the fishery and how it has been monitored.
