The Antarctic Toothfish Fishery

Antarctic toothfish - averaging 10-15 kg as young fish and 30-40 kg as adults - are fished using longlines in southern Antarctic waters. NIWA fisheries scientist Alistair Dunn describes the history of the fishery and how it has been monitored. So far 25,000 toothfish have been tagged to provide population data. Models based on this information are used to determine the sustainable yield.
