Conference location and accommodation
We have booked out a number of discounted rooms at the Waldorf Stadium apartment, which is about 10 minutes walk from the conference venue at Old Government House (OGH) on the University of Auckland campus.
We have arranged a discounted rate for AQUA 2016 based on double and triple occupancy in two types of two bedroom apartments.
1. Triple occupancy (2 rooms; 1 queen bed and two twin beds) will be offered on priority to students attending AQUA for $75 dollars a night per person (including GST; 15% in NZ). This price is only valid for a three person occupancy for the entire conference duration with check in 4 December and check out 10 December (6 nights total).
2. Double occupancy (2 rooms; 2 queen beds) will be offered to anyone attending AQUA for $110 dollars a night per person (including GST; 15% in NZ). This price is only valid for a two person occupancy for the entire conference duration with check in 4 December and check out 10 December (6 nights total).
The organizing committee will facilitate an initial booking for people who are interested in this offer. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will pass on the details of your provisional booking with Waldorf.
The responsibility for completing the booking arrangements and the payment will lie with the attendees.
Are you a student?
Please let us know if you are a student and are attending the conference solo as we can try help to connect you with other students who may like round out a three person apartment.
Alternative student accommodation at University of Auckland
Alternative student accommodation is available at University Hall at the University of Auckland. This accommodation option is not being handled by NIWA. To book, go to the Campus Summer Stays website, select the Auckland campus 'Uni Hall', enter your check in date and the code 'ENVIRON'. The special rate of $65/night for a single room including breakfast will appear for you to book.
The conference will be held at the Old Government House (OGH) which is about a 10-minute uphill walk from the Waldorf Stadium Apartments.
Care needs to be taken crossing Beach Road, Anzac Ave, Symonds Street, and Alten Road which are often busy with cars and buses. All of these roads have good crossing locations for pedestrians.
NIWA will be hosting the quiz night at 41 Market Place, which is a 15 minute walk along flat ground from the Waldorf Stadium Apartments.
The conference dinner will be held at Villa Maria Estate in the Waitomokia Volcanic Crater. The event will consist of canapes and a winery tour, a three course meal, and is inclusive of a drinks service (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Villa Maria's Cellar Selection wines will be made available as part of the dinner service. Costs for attending the dinner are included in your general registration. For those wanting to try single vineyard and reserve range wines you are welcome to at your own expense.
To attend, all you will need to do is ensure you are at the bus departure point on time (Note: two buses will head out to the venue, with staggered departure times of 5pm and 5.15pm).
This is a very nice dinner venue, so we would appreciate if you would please come dressed in tidy apparrel (smart casual), not field gear.
More details about Villa Maria Estate's wines and Waitomokia maar in the context of the Auckland Volcanic Field can be found below at:
Bus departure for the mid-conference field trip and for the conference dinner will be from Princes Street, just up a small incline from OGH.
The field trip bus will depart at 9am sharp 7 December.
The conference dinner bus will have a staggered departure, with one bus leaving at 5pm and the other following at 5.15pm.
More information about the conference dinner and fieldtrips can be found below.
