Retrospective - November to January Outlook

The climate we predicted and what actually happened.

Predicted rainfall: Rainfall is likely to be normal or below normal over the South Island. In the North Island, rainfall is likely to be normal or above normal.

Outcome: In the North Island rainfall totals were above normal in most areas apart from Gisborne, East Cape, Manuatu and the Wellington Region where rainfall totals were near normal. For the South Island above normal rainfall totals were recorded in parts of the Tasman District, Marlborough, Westland and Otago. Near normal rainfall totals were recorded in all other areas of the South Island.

Predicted air temperature: Temperatures are likely or very likely to be above average for this time of year across the whole country.

Outcome: Temperatures were above average for the majority of the country apart from the Wairarapa coast and Hawkes Bay where temperatures were near average.
