Retrospective - October to December Outlook

The climate we predicted and what actually happened.

Predicted rainfall: Rainfall is likely to be near normal or below normal in the east of both islands and the southwest of the South Island, and near normal elsewhere.

Outcome: In the North Island rainfall totals were below normal in most areas apart from Gisborne, East Cape and Haweks Bay where rainfall totals were near normal. For the South Island below normal rainfall totals were recorded in north Westland, North Canterbury, the south Canterbury coast, Southland and Stewart Island. Near normal rainfall totals were recorded in all other areas of the South Island.

Predicted air temperature: Temperatures are likely to be above average, in all regions.

Outcome: Temperature were above average for the majority of the country apart from parts of the Northland Region, parts of the Wellington Region, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and East Cape where temperatures were normal.
