Climate Update is a summary each month of New Zealand’s climate, including soil moisture and river flows.

October 2004 – Number 64

September’s climate: September rainfall well below normal in Northland, above normal in central New Zealand and Southland. Below average temperatures were recorded for the third consecutive month.

September’s river flows: Stream and river flows were low in the north and east.

Soil moisture levels: Marlborough-Kaikoura coast and parts of eastern Northland and inland Otago lower than average.

Three-month outlook: Drier than average conditions likely in the north and east of the North Island; possibly cooler than average in the north and west of the North Island.
