NIWA is installing new meteorological monitoring stations in Nelson City and the Tasman district as part of an air quality initiative.

The Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council have identified air quality as an issue for their region. Thanks to funding from the Ministry for the Environment, the councils worked with NIWA to design a meteorological monitoring network that will provide data

  • to enhance their understanding of air quality in the region, and
  • for use in modelling the dispersion of pollutants around the region.

The meteorological variables being measured include wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall. Installation and commissioning of the five sites should be completed shortly.
