The parched earth on the cover says it all: droughts can be devastating. As can floods, and other extreme weather. A new book suggests ways that agriculture and forestry practices around the world could be improved to cope better with natural climate variability. That, in turn, would go a long way to reducing the vulnerability of these primary industries to climate change.

Increasing Climate Variability and Change: Reducing the vulnerability of agriculture and forestry is edited by Dr Jim Salinger of NIWA, along with MVK Sivakumar (World Meteorological Organization, Geneva), and Raymond P Motha (US Department of Agriculture, Washington DC). It is published by Springer.
