NIWA Submersible In-situ Flume deployed in an estuary

The NIWA submersible in-situ flume is designed to study erosion of muddy sediments in rivers, lakes and estuaries.

The flume, which is shaped like a wind tunnel, provides data on sediment erosion and transport under different flow conditions. The data are used for understanding mechanisms of cohesive sediment transport and for setting values for empirical parameters in sediment-transport models. The flume is equipped with optical backscatter sensors, water sampling system, multi-point eco-sounder, and an electromagnetic flow meter.
