NIWA’s eco-hydraulics flume is an artificial channel which is adjustable over a wide range of hydraulic conditions and is designed specifically for biological, eco-hydraulic, and pure hydraulic research. It is believed to be the world’s only fully adjustable flume which has been set up for large-scale biological studies and also meets the stringent requirements for hydraulic modelling. This facility enhances NIWA’s research capability by providing a unique opportunity to control and measure accurately the physical forces in flowing waters – something which has been lacking from most previous ecological investigations in moving waters. The flume is in heavy demand by NIWA scientists and our national and international collaborators.
