Chris, trained as a mathematician, has worked on a variety of quantitative problems, mostly in fisheries research (e.g., survey design, age and growth, stock assessment), but sometimes in other areas (e.g., climate prediction, randomization testing, seabird population modelling). For most of these problems, his aim has been to devise novel methods to make sound inferences about natural systems from complex data. 

Matt has a background in European fisheries, with broad experience in fisheries, fish biology, fisheries economics, and quantitative stock assessment. Recently Matt has focused on stock assessment modelling of deepwater fishes, understanding fisheries by-catch, and trophic interactions of fishes, and has varied his work programme by teaching fisheries science and management at Victoria University of Wellington. Matt is manager of NIWA's Deepwater Fisheries Group and a programme leader for the NIWA's National Centre for Fisheries Assessing Fishery Resources programme. 

Stuart specialises in research on the biology and stock assessment of coastal and middle depth fish and fisheries around New Zealand, and more recently the Antarctic toothfish fishery in the Ross Sea. He leads the NIWA National Fisheries Centre International Fisheries Programme. Stuart has been a New Zealand delegate to the annual meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) for over 15 years and leads the MSI project on the sustainability of the Ross Sea ecosystem. 

Malcolm is a fisheries scientist and marine ecologist who studies the population biology of coastal and pelagic fishes. He has particular interests in cartilaginous fishes (sharks, skates and chimaeras), estuarine fishes, migration and behaviour, and age and growth. Recent research projects include tagging studies of the migratory and diving behaviour of great white sharks, and the use of New Zealand estuaries as nursery grounds by juvenile fish and sharks.
