Murray has a PhD in Physics and worked in Europe on wave propagation in the atmosphere and space. He worked in New Zealand, Canada, the USA, and Antarctica on radar methods to determine the role of ocean waves in coastal and air-sea interaction processes, before taking on a managemenet role in NIWA.
Guy is NIWA's Science Leader for air quality research; he has twenty five years' experience in environmental management, research and consulting including fifteen years as an active researcher in atmospheric chemistry and air quality. Guy has a PhD in atmospheric chemistry from the University of Essex and has previously worked as a researcher at the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Essex and as a consultant at Cambridge Consultants.
From a previous research career spanning several areas of physics, Keith switched to studying atmospheric greenhouse gases in about 1990. Focussing principally on methane, Keith has led programmes that measure and interpret methane emissions from farmed livestock in collaboration with agricultural scientists, and on the context of the global methane cycle, publishing widely on these topics. He has contributed to various IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports that led to the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
Cliff coordinates the Ocean-Atmosphere Research and advises the Chief Scientists of Oceans, Atmosphere and Climate Change Centres. He currently contributes to international policy development on ocean fertilisation via the London Convention and national perspectives on ocean fertilisation and acidification via the NZ government Ocean Fertilisation stakeholder group and the NZ Royal Society. He is also a member of the Scientific Steering Committee for the IGBP program SOLAS (Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study).
Richard McKenzie is principal scientist for radiation at New Zealand's National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA). He lives in Alexandra and works at Lauder, both in the Central Otago region of New Zealand. He has degrees in physics from the University of Canterbury and the University of the South pacific (Fiji), and received a doctorate in atmospheric physics from the University of Oxford, England. He is a world leader in UV research and he works closely with health advisors.
Katja Riedel studied Chemistry at the University of Wuppertal in Germany. For her PhD she went to Antarctica and worked for the Alfred Wegener Institute for polar and marine research. The topic of her research was "Photooxidants in the Antarctic troposphere". In 2001 she came to New Zealand to work as an Atmospheric Scientist for NIWA. Since then Katja has participated in several expeditions to Antarctica. Her main research interests are greenhouse gases in the New Zealand atmosphere and in ice cores.
