- Freshwater Biodiversity: a preliminary global assessment – The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) was established in 2000 as the world biodiversity information and assessment centre of the United Nations Environment Programme. Information on inland waters and their biodiversity provided on the WCMC site under “Habitats | Freshwater | Freshwater Biodiversity” includes the first global assessment of areas of special importance for freshwater biodiversity.
