NIWA Science & Technology Fair organisers and judges receive special thanks

The 2015 NIWA Regional Science & Technology Fairs have been a resounding success with over 1800 students competing from more than 130 schools. To help make these fairs the success they are, NIWA staff work closely with Fair organising committees as well as providing scientists in key areas to help with judging.

This hard work has been recognised over the last few weeks with NIWA receiving numerous emails of gratitude from competing students.

Timothy Dreadon who was awarded the 'Best Year 11 Innovation, invention or investigation Award' at the Manukau fair, writes: “I would like to say thank you for the effort and resources that your company puts into such a positive event. Your generosity inspires many, including me, to think creatively about science. It is a privilege to have won this prize and because of your sponsorship I will strive for future scientific achievement.”

Daniel Brewster from Pukekohe High School who was awarded 3rd Equal Place in the 'Years 11, 12 & 13 Senior Science Category' at the Manakau fair writes: “All in all I found it to be a very interesting and enjoyable experience, and I am extremely grateful for your acknowledgement of my Science Fair on behalf of NIWA.”

NIWA has been a principal sponsor of Regional Science & Technology fairs around the country for more than 20 years and currently provides major sponsorship for the Auckland, Manakau, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Wellington Fairs. NIWA Science Fair co-ordinator and senior judge, Tracey Burton says the fairs are a great opportunity for NIWA to engage with students who have an interest in science.

“It is really great to receive this kind of feedback from students, but the real thanks comes in knowing that for some students, science fairs will spark a lifelong interest in science”.
