New and upgraded NIWA Satellite Data Services

Science Centres: Fisheries

NIWA’s Sea Surface Temperature web service has been revised and improved. It now offers:

  • a new (and simpler) way of accessing the data,
  • new services (including links to ocean current analyses),
  • a new subscription method to access the data,
  • a new SST data analysis tool (called Sat-View) for PCs – which can be used to update the data, even while at sea.

Revised web service

The new service is accessible from the online services section of this website. The data types available include:

  • SST analyses on New Zealand, east coast Australia, and private areas,
  • an SST climatology for the New Zealand region,
  • monthly mean SST analyses (January 1993 to present) for the New Zealand region,
  • GMS satellite cloud imagery.

Sat–View

This data analysis software package is available to Gold and Silver subscribers to NIWA’s Satellite Data Services. It provides direct access to a selection of NIWA satellite data products without the need to log on to the NIWA website. You can also obtain sea surface temperature images (and isotherm analyses) for user-selectable areas by drawing the required area on a map, specifying the period over which the data are to be composited, and choosing a ground resolution that minimises transmission costs, while still providing adequate information for fisheries targeting.

For more details, see the Sat-View description page.
