Environmental Information Update 01 April 2011

Science Centres: Environmental Information, Pacific Rim

Welcome to the April 2011 Environmental Information Update. This newsletter will keep you up-to-date with the work of NIWA's Centre for Environmental Information.

Dr Jochen Schmidt has been appointed as the Chief Scientist for NIWA’s new National Centre for Environmental Information.
New Zealand’s National Rivers Water Quality Network (NRWQN) is lauded internationally as a model of a long-term, stable, monitoring programme. Over 18 000 water quality samples have been analysed over the past 20-plus years. Our data provides important information for local and regional authorities to manage New Zealand rivers, and helps government agencies report on the state of our environment.
“Monitoring, managing, and delivering environmental information from the sky to the sea.”
NIWA has implemented a web portal to provide public access to data and reports from the Ocean Survey 2020 Bay of Islands Survey. The portal, the first of its kind in New Zealand, provides open data using open code and standards, enabling other users to embed data into their own applications.
NIWA’s National Climate Database is a comprehensive archive of climate data from New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and Antarctica. It is updated daily and, for many locations, hourly. The data is freely available via CliFlo, NIWA's main climate data portal.
