Science Centres: Climate
The climate we predicted and what actually happened.
Predicted rainfall: Seasonal rainfall is likely to be normal or above normal in the north and east of the North Island, normal or below normal in the east of the South Island, and near normal elsewhere.
Outcome: Above normal rainfall fell in parts of Northland, Auckland, north of the Waikato Region, the Bay of Plenty Region, north and west of the Gisborne Region, north of the Hawkes Bay Region, the Tasman Region, the Nelson Region, north of the Marlborough Region and north of the Westcoast Region. Below normal rainfall fell in parts of north and central Canterbury, south of the Westcoast Region, west of the Otago Region, and the majority of the Southland Region. Normal rainfalls were experienced elsewhere.
Predicted air temperature: Temperatures are likely to be average or above average in the east of the South Island, and above average in all other regions.
Outcome: Temperatures were above average in all regions apart from the Wairarapa District and west of the Southland Region where average temperatures were recorded.
