Science Centres: Climate
The climate we predicted and what actually happened.
Predicted rainfall: Seasonal rainfall is likely to be normal or above normal in all North Island regions, and near normal in all South Island regions.
Outcome: Auckland, the Coromandel, North Waikato, Bay of Plenty, East Cape, Haweks Bay, coastal Taranaki, south Manawatu, north Wellington Region, coastal south Canterbury, most of Otago and eastern parts of Southland experienced above normal rainfall. The Buller District, Nelson and Motueka recorded below normal rainfall. Normal rainfalls were experienced elsewhere.
Predicted air temperature: Early autumn temperatures (February to April) are likely to be above average in all regions, except in the east of the both Islands where average or above average temperatures are equally likely.
Outcome: Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, East Cape, east Waikato, northern Hawkes Bay, parts of the Manawatu and Golden Bay experienced above average temperatures. The central Westcoast and eastern Southland recorded below average temperatures. Normal temperatures were recorded elsewhere.
