Science Centres: Climate

The climate we predicted and what actually happened.

Predicted rainfall: Rainfall, soil moisture levels and stream flows are likely to be near normal in all regions.

Outcome: Above normal rainfall over the central North Island, the Nelson and Marlborough Regions, and Kapiti. Below normal rainfall for the Auckland and Coromandel regions, Westport, the Southland Region and eastern Otago. Normal elsewhere.

Predicted air temperature: Air temperatures are expected to be near average in all regions.  Sea surface temperatures near New Zealand are likely to be somewhat below average through August-October.

Outcome: Mostly average temperatures for New Zealand apart from below average temperatures for Kaitaia and southern Hawkes Bay. Above average temperatures for central Northland, coastal areas of the Bay of Plenty, central Otago and the Mackenzie Basin.
