Retrospective - July to September Outlook

Science Centres: Climate

The climate we predicted and what actually happened.

Predicted rainfall

Normal or above normal over the northern North Island and eastern regions of both islands, and normal elsewhere.

Outcome

Mostly normal rainfall over New Zealand apart from above normal rainfall along the west coast of the South Island, over parts of the Nelson and Marlborough regions, and in the central North Island. Areas of below normal rainfall were observed over parts of Southland and Otago, along the east coast of Canterbury to Marlborough on the South Island, the south east of the North Island, parts of the Auckland region, and parts of the Coromandel Peninsula.

Predicted air temperature

Average in all regions, except for average or below average in the east of the South Island. Cold spells and seasonal frosts are still expected throughout the South Island and central North Island.

Outcome

Mostly above normal temperatures for the South Island apart from normal temperatures over parts of Southland, Otago, the Westcoast, Tasman and Marlborough regions. Mostly normal temperatures for the North Island apart from above normal temperatures in the north of the North Island and below normal temperatures in southern Hawkes Bay and parts of Northland.
