New quick ID guides
Science Centres: Aquatic Biodiversity and Biosecurity
NIWA has produced guides for a range of freshwater plants, algae, fish, and invertebrates, so freshwater scientists around the country can make quick and accurate species identifications.
The set include guides for identification at coarse levels (e.g., freshwater fish families and major groups of freshwater algae), as well as detailed guides for genus and species level. The detailed guides cover native fish species (galaxiids and bullies), aquatic plants (including introduced pest species and threatened natives), various algal groups, and oligochaete worms.
Development of the guides has been funded by DOC’s Terrestrial & Freshwater Biodiversity Information System Programme, with research funding from the Foundation for Research, Science & Technology.
